This time of year there is always an increased interest in the supernatural – ghouls, goblins, and even vampires. But did you know that there are probably several vampires lurking in your Sarasota-area home all year long?

These vampires don’t suck blood, though – they suck energy and waste your money.

What is Vampire Energy Use?

Vampire energy use is a term used to describe electronic devices that continue to “suck” energy even though they are not in use (sometimes also referred to as a “phantom load.”) Most often, vampire energy use is a result of your electronics being in standby mode rather than turned completely off.

Some of the biggest energy vampires in your home include:

  • Televisions
  • Computers
  • Video Consoles
  • DVD/Bluray Players
  • Chargers

According to ENERGY STAR, vampire energy use costs the average U.S. household $100 a year. Wouldn’t you like an easy way to save money and help the environment? Slay the vampires in your Sarasota-area home!

3 Ways To Slay Vampire Energy Use

While a wooden stake is the remedy for a “real” vampire – we don’t recommend that method for the vampire electronics in your home. (Although a wooden stake through your TV may work, it will only be temporary because you will have to purchase a new one.)

1. Turn off your vampires

Seems simple, right? Unfortunately, it is a little more complicated. Although you may press the power button on your TV, DVD player or video console, it probably didn’t turn off, but went into a standby mode.

Standby allows your electronics to turn on more quickly when called upon, but the energy waste can offset this small convenience. Find the real off switch by consulting the manual.

2. Unplug the vampires

Unplugging your electronics is the simplest way to slay vampire energy use. Without direct access to the power grid, they are as good as dead. This is the best tactic to get rid of energy waste from cell phone, laptop and other chargers.

However, this method may not be ideal for other vampire electronics, which brings us to our third solution.

3. Get a smart power strip

smart power strip helps slay vampire energy use by automatically shutting off power to devices that are not in use. This method is the most convenient and likely the most effective because it won’t leave it up to you to unplug or turn off the devices.
